Setting the nameservers or changing the nameservers is required when you set up a Website. I already wrote about this topic, How to Set Nameservers, How to Change Nameservers, with all the details and illustrations at Sehdi.com.

As usual, I again used GoDaddy and DreamHost in this example. I am comfortable using GoDaddy and DreamHost. I like the features of GoDaddy as a domain registrar and DreamHost as a web hosting provider.

How to Set Nameservers or How to Change Nameservers

Proceed to GoDaddy or your domain name registrar.

1. Login by supplying your username and password.

2. Click the domain name, for example, DOMAIN-NAME-WHATEVER.COM.

3. Click Set Nameservers under “Nameservers”.

4. Replace the current nameservers, if there are any, with DreamHost nameservers if your web host is DreamHost.

The Dreamhost nameservers are the following:

NS1.DREAMHOST.COM
NS2.DREAMHOST.COM
NS3.DREAMHOST.COM

Enter NS1.DREAMHOST.COM at the space corresponding to Nameserver 1

Enter NS2.DREAMHOST.COM at the space corresponding to Nameserver 2

Enter NS3.DREAMHOST.COM at the space corresponding to Nameserver 3

5. Click the button “OK” after you supplied the new nameservers.

A pop-up window will open with this text:

“Your changes have been submitted. Please allow a few minutes for the changes to take effect.”

5. Click the button “OK”.

That’s it!

You will have to wait for 48-72 hours for the DNS to propagate. I am not going to explain to you what is DNS propagation but it is important for you to know that this process is needed.

I wrote this blog entry, How to Set Up a Website, on the assumption that you already registered a domain name with a domain registrar and signed up for a web hosting account with a web hosting provider.

Just like in my previous posts, I will use DreamHost on how to set up a Website in this example as I am comfortable using DreamHost being its customer for three (3) years now. I also like the features that DreamHost offers.

How to Set Up a Website

Proceed to DreamHost.

1. Supply the email address and password that you used when you signed up for a web hosting account with DreamHost at the “DreamHost: Login” page and click the button “Login”.

2. Click the link “Manage Domains” on the left side under “Toolbox” above the “Main Menu”.

3. Click the link “Add New Domain / Sub-Domain”.

4. Supply the necessary details at the blank fields at the “DreamHost Web Panel > Domain : Manage Domains” page.

5. Click the button “Fully host this domain”.

You have done it.

All you have to do now is check if the Website has been set up successfully.

First, check if the domain name has been added.

Second, check the webFTP if the web directory has been created.

Actually, it does not really end there yet. There are still a lot of things to do.

You need to change or set the nameservers.

On the premise that this has not been done yet especially if you registered the domain name somewhere else other than DreamHost like GoDaddy for example.

You need to create pages.

On the premise that you will have a Website with more than two pages. A one-page Website is possible but this you need to consider very carefully especially if you have a lot of information that you would like to share.

Changing or setting the nameservers and creating pages are two different topics but still belong to the topic setting up a Website. The Website will not be set up completely unless you changed the nameservers and created a few pages to make your Website visible to the public.

It has been almost three weeks when I started problogging and wrote some tips and ideas on how to start a blog, how to set up a blog, and how to promote a blog. Let me make a summary guide to what I have written for the past three weeks.
Before I started problogging, I said I did not have any plan but I realized that I actually have some unwritten plans. I just did not have a detailed written plan but only unwritten ones. Those plans were the ideas at the back of my head which encourage me to start problogging.

If you also have those unwritten plans at the back your head, why don’t you start problogging too? Why don’t you start planning and implementing what you have planned so far? Why don’t you map our your plan, and make it a reality?

Ten (10) Points to guide you to Starting and Implementing a Blog

1. Plan and Start a Blog

Planning and Starting a Blog. There are requirements when starting a blog. If you start planning and starting a blog, it is not just about planning and starting a blog, it is also about choosing a topic or niche, about defining your niche.

You can either start a blog with a certain topic or a niche or write just about anything you would like to discuss. But if you are good at something, it is better to concentrate on your defined subjects and later on just inject once in a while writing about yourself and your hobbies for a little variety.

2. Have your own Domain Name

Domain Name or Free Subdomain Name. There are advantages and disadvantages of having your own domain name or having a free subdomain name. But if you are serious about your problogging venture, having your own domain name is a better option.

3. Choose a good Domain Name

Choosing a good Domain Name. Making a choice is critical when you decide to have your own domain name. What top-level domain name is better? What second-level domain name is good? The “com” top-level domain name is always better unless if you have no more option but to go for the “net”, but think about it a couple of times first.

4. Register your Domain Name

Registering a Domain Name. Why is it better to register your own domain name instead of availing the free domain registration provided by the web host if ever you decide to have a self-hosted blog rather than having a free-hosted blog? It is the freedom and the control you will have over your own domain name.

5. Have a Web Host

Choosing a Web Host. There are different requirements in choosing a web host. There are a lot of features a web host can offer. What you think do you need among the good features they have? Even if you are new to the idea of having a paid web host, you can experiment with your control panel until you will be able to know how it works. Having a paid web host gives you more freedom to do whatever you like with your blog. Just do not abuse it if you have unlimited storage and bandwidth.

6. Set up a Blog

Setting Up a Blog. Setting up a blog is an investment. Investing money in something would give you a reason to do problogging seriously. When setting up a blog, what are the possible pages that you can create for your blog, and before you even start writing content for your blog?

7. Write Content for your Blog

Start Writing Content for your Blog. Contents are important for your blog, so start writing content for your blog. How are you supposed to know if you will be successful in problogging if you will not give it a try? How are you supposed to know if you will make money problogging, if you will not invest some of your time, effort and energy in writing content? How are you supposed to know if you will earn money online if you do not have any contents in your blog? If you will not start writing content for your blog, then people have nothing to read. But how do you start writing content for your blog when you think that there is nothing you can think of to write about?

8. Remember your Niche and Market

Things to remember when Writing Content for a Blog. Think of your niche when you are writing content for your blog. Always remember your niche and market, your target readers, so as not to digress from the topic that you are supposed to discuss. List the possible subtopics or specific topics under your main topics. Watch a television, read a phrase in a book, and start expounding on what you saw and read.

9. Promote your Blog

Ways on Promoting a Blog. There are several ways on promoting your blog, from search engines to social media like the social networking sites, social bookmarking sites, blog networks, and all the other possibilities that you can think of on how to promote your blog.

10. Know your Web Statistics, Blog Traffic and Site Visitors

How to know your Web Statistics, Blog Traffic and Site Visitors? How would you know if you indeed have visitors in your blog. For you to know the details is for you to have a website statistics tracking tool or web monitoring tool for your blog. Google Analytics is one example of a web statistics analyzer that I have recommended. With web analytics you will know which pages are often visited and what keywords brought your visitors to your blog.

That’s it. Everything has been set up. It is time to move on to earning money problogging. It is time to explore making money online.

I finished writing about registering a domain name and choosing a web host. It is time to set up a blog. In your case, I just hope that you already registered your own domain name and found a web host to host your blog. If you noticed, I skipped writing about free web hosting. Why I skipped writing about free web hosting? Well, it is just an option.

You see, if I would like to earn money from blogging, I thought that I should make an investment so I will also take problogging seriously. If I know that I invested something, I know that I need to get a return from that investment. If things are free, sometimes we take things for granted. But if we know that we have invested some money too not only our time and effort into something, we tend to do more things.

But before writing on how to set up a blog, let me remind you first what I wrote before. When I wrote about starting a blog, I mentioned about a niche or topic which I have been thinking that I could discuss on my blog but opted to probably just write about anything that I would like to write. I even have an alternative that instead of starting a new blog, I could just improve my current websites and blogs and update them regularly.

Why am I reminding you about it? While you were reading that blog entry on planning and starting a blog, I hope that you also already thought of the main topic or main subject that you would like to discuss on your blog. I hope that you thought about that even before you registered a domain name because that is what I normally do. When I registered ProBlogit.com I already know what I would like to write on this blog.

I have been thinking of problogging for quite some time now. In order for me to be able to start problogging, I need a space to write my thoughts. So, I registered a domain name. Yes, exactly this one, the ProBlogit.com which is currently being hosted at Dreamhost.

How to set up a blog?

All I did was, logged-in at the Control Panel at Dreamhost and instead of installing WordPress manually, I used the One-Click Automatic Installer of Dreamhost. Then, I created a WordPress theme based on the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) of my two blogs. I just tweak it a little bit and was able to create a WordPress theme just within a day. And voila, this is the result.

In your case, if you do not have your own design, you can just choose from all the WordPress themes which were made available to you by Dreamhost. If you cannot decide yet, make use of the default theme first. Eventually, you will be able to find a nice theme to your liking.

If One-Click Automatic Installer is not available at the web host you have an account with, ask someone you know to install WordPress for you. If not, read about it at WordPress.org Codex, Getting Started with WordPress, especially this one, Installing WordPress. If you still cannot get it, ask me and we will talk and discuss about it.

Once WordPress was installed and running, instead of writing immediately, I created some very important pages first.

About Page. Probably this page is the most important page in a blog. I created this page as this is what the readers check to see who is the author or writer of the blog. It is my identity and it gives me more credibility. It gives the readers an idea about me.

Contact Page. If the readers have questions which are not related to the topics, this is where they can contact me. It gives the readers the opportunity to ask me and it gives them an idea that they can actually get in touch with me if they have any questions.

Search Page. I created this page immediately even if WordPress has a built-in search capability. I reserve this page for Google Site Search.

Archives Page. I also created this page together with the other pages. I just reserve this page for future archiving purposes. It could give the readers easy access to all the articles.

Links Page. I also created this page as I have other websites and blogs too. I can just link my other websites and blogs from this page. This way, I give my other blogs and websites more exposure to other readers even if they are not interested in my other sites.

Terms of Use Page. If the blog is about problogging and is earning, or hopes of earning from problogging or even just blogging, it is just proper to let the readers know that I am earning from my writing. This is where I wrote all about the Terms of Use, Copyright, Disclaimer, Copyright, Disclosure, and Privacy Policy of the blog or website. In my other sites, I have separated these pages from each other but putting it in one page saves the readers some time so they do not have to go from one page to another.

Sitemap Page. This is optional but Google likes to access this page. So I created this page even if I do not have any content in there yet because I know that this will be very useful later on.

After the pages were created, I thought of all the categories or subtopics that I would like to cover within the niche or main topic or main subject that I would like to write about. Even if I have no articles yet, I always do this as these categories will guide me and remind me that I have those subtopics to think of.

Once I have the pages and categories in place, I started writing for my about page and other pages.

When everything was done with ProBlogit.com, as I already have those pages where my readers can view, I then started writing for this blog. I finally started problogging. But let me remind you that it took me three months to start problogging even if I had everything in place. I just did not have the time to start before April 2, 2009 as web designing was my priority. But I thought, if I will not start writing, then nothing will happen. So without hesitation, I just did it. I just said to myself, start now, just “Pro Blog it”. The “it” here refers literally to anything that I would like to write in my new problogging venture, problogging tips and ideas, and problogging reviews and opinions.

So that’s it, I just “Pro Blog it”.
