I asked myself this question so many times, “Can Bing and Yahoo! really compete with Google?” So I documented something last night.

Ok, ok, this morning, at past 2 o’clock in the morning.

I have to admit, I slept late las night, I mean morning already. I wrote a blog entry for my personal blog and posted it at 11:53pm, just before midnight. Then I finished reading and scanning other blogs that I am subscribed to. I have a habit to read everything before I sleep. It took me a while though to finish reading and scanning them.

Then before I went to bed, I thought of checking the top 3 search engines if the blog entry, Mount Gurten, Wabern, Bern, Switzerland Day Trip, that I posted at my personal blog got indexed. I typed the keywords “mount gurten” in Google, Bing and Yahoo!, and what did I find?

Well, the blog entry was number 3 on the first page of Google search engine results page (SERP) while it cannot be found in Bing and Yahoo! search engines.

I typed the keywords “mount gurten wabern” and it was number 1 on the first page of Google, and again, it cannot be found in Bing and Yahoo! search engine results pages.

Google was so fast in crawling my site and indexed the blog entry within 2 hours. What was Bing and Yahoo! doing then?

Just before I posted this blog entry here, I checked Google, Bing and Yahoo! again. The search engines results pages (SERPs) are the same.

Which makes me really wonder, can Bing and Yahoo! really compete with Google?

I know Bing and Yahoo! have different algorithms than Google but does it not show that they are not sort of paying attention when people are publishing?

Google, Bing and Yahoo! search engines already indexed my personal blog and other blogs, so to crawl and index it again is not a problem. So what makes Bing and Yahoo! so slow in finding out that a website or a blog has just been updated?

Maybe sleeping?

How would you like to get your blog indexed by Bing? Although I am not a search engine optimization or SEO guru, I have observed a lot regarding search engine optimization since I started designing web sites and blog themes. Almost all the sites and blogs I created even those which were not promoted have been successfully indexed by Google as well as Yahoo Search.

Last week, I wrote about the topic on how to get indexed by Google. I did not exactly know how and when Google indexed the blog entries of Pro Blog it. I just know that I wrote quite a lot for ProBlogit.com and linked the blog entries if they were worth linking for, both internally (from this blog) and externally (from my other blogs) without using Digg, Reddit nor StumbleUpon. I have an idea how ProBlogit.com got indexed, I just did not want to sound too presumptuous that I know a lot about it.

I decided to make an experiment with Bing, formerly MSN Live Search. I noticed that most pages that Live Search have, they were like transferred to Bing. ProBlogit.com was not really indexed yet by the former MSN Live Search so when I searched Bing, I only found one page which is the domain name itself.

On June 24, 2009, I submitted three domain names to Bing using the url http://www.bing.com/docs/submit.aspx just to test how long the blogs will be indexed. But I realized that I can actually access the Webmaster Center of Bing when I changed the place from Switzerland to United States as the link to the Webmaster Center is not available in Switzerland. Then I added three domain names to really get the blog entries indexed by Bing.

When I checked Bing today, I saw that ProBlogit.com got indexed but only three (3) pages. The other site got indexed too but the result is not that satisfactory. Then SofieHofmann.com got really indexed by Bing. The number of pages at SofieHofmann.com that got indexed by Bing increased from 29 pages when it was last indexed on June 25, 2009 to 62 pages when it was indexed on June 30, 2009.

If you noticed even if Bing crawled SofieHofmann.com after I submitted it, not a lot of pages and blog entries got indexed right away, only when it got indexed again after June 25, 2009. As I see it, eventually, once Bing and Google get a habit of crawling the sites and blogs, your blog or site will most likely going to be indexed, sometimes depending on the quality of your content. It could be indexed few minutes after you wrote a blog entry, maybe after a day, or it could also take longer than one week.

If you would like to read more about this topic, read my other blog entry at Sehdi.com, Get Indexed by Google and Bing Search Engines. I also wrote about getting indexed by Bing and Google there as I will be discussing other sites other than I already mentioned above.
