I asked myself this question so many times, “Can Bing and Yahoo! really compete with Google?” So I documented something last night.

Ok, ok, this morning, at past 2 o’clock in the morning.

I have to admit, I slept late las night, I mean morning already. I wrote a blog entry for my personal blog and posted it at 11:53pm, just before midnight. Then I finished reading and scanning other blogs that I am subscribed to. I have a habit to read everything before I sleep. It took me a while though to finish reading and scanning them.

Then before I went to bed, I thought of checking the top 3 search engines if the blog entry, Mount Gurten, Wabern, Bern, Switzerland Day Trip, that I posted at my personal blog got indexed. I typed the keywords “mount gurten” in Google, Bing and Yahoo!, and what did I find?

Well, the blog entry was number 3 on the first page of Google search engine results page (SERP) while it cannot be found in Bing and Yahoo! search engines.

I typed the keywords “mount gurten wabern” and it was number 1 on the first page of Google, and again, it cannot be found in Bing and Yahoo! search engine results pages.

Google was so fast in crawling my site and indexed the blog entry within 2 hours. What was Bing and Yahoo! doing then?

Just before I posted this blog entry here, I checked Google, Bing and Yahoo! again. The search engines results pages (SERPs) are the same.

Which makes me really wonder, can Bing and Yahoo! really compete with Google?

I know Bing and Yahoo! have different algorithms than Google but does it not show that they are not sort of paying attention when people are publishing?

Google, Bing and Yahoo! search engines already indexed my personal blog and other blogs, so to crawl and index it again is not a problem. So what makes Bing and Yahoo! so slow in finding out that a website or a blog has just been updated?

Google Search is maybe smart but it is not so intelligent. Google Search is not so intelligent enough to recognize which blog entry is the original article and not the original one. Google Search allows itself to be fooled by some blogs and sites which were publishing articles that were copied from other blogs and sites.

I have written before that Google crawls and indexes the site or blog any time it wants. Google Search will do whatever it wants, whenever it wants to crawl and index your blogs and sites. Sometimes you may influence the search results but you cannot really play a game with Google Search. But once in a while, you might actually be able to “game” Google Search.

I cannot tell you how to do it though as I do not play that kind of game. But let me show you an example how other blogs and sites may have played a game with Google Search concerning crawling and indexing and even taking the top spot on the search results page.

On September 02, 2009, I wrote this blog entry, Inverness, the Mouth of the River Ness in Scotland at Sofie Hofmann dot com. Yesterday, I saw that Google Search crawled and indexed another blog entry with the same title but with a different URL. The content on that site was copied from my blog entry, Inverness, the Mouth of the River Ness in Scotland which was published at Sofie Hofmann dot com.

I was surprised that Google Search crawled and indexed the different URL faster than my blog entry which is actually the original source of what Google Search crawled and indexed yesterday.

I checked Google Search and found out that the blog entry with a different URL was number 1 on the first page using keywords “inverness mouth of the river ness” and my site Sofie Hofmann dot com, not even the blog entry, was on the fourth page. I also checked other keywords like “inverness mouth” and “inverness mouth river ness”. The other URL was number 2 and number 3 respectively on the first page. My site was on the fourth page and third page respectively but the blog entry itself was nowhere to be found.

Those were the search results as of yesterday, the last time I checked Google Search. It may change in the next few days though if Google Search will recognize that my blog entry has more value than the other one.

Then I checked Google Blog Search using keywords “inverness mouth of the river ness”, “inverness mouth river ness”, “inverness river ness”, and “inverness mouth”. I saw that my original blog entry was actually crawled and indexed by Google Blog Search on September 02, 2009, the same day when I published Inverness, the Mouth of the River Ness in Scotland at Sofie Hofmann dot com. My blog entry using the keywords that I already mentioned was number 1 on the first page. When I tried using the keywords “inverness scotland”, the blog entry was only number 4 on the first page.

What I was just blogging were the reasons why I say that Google Search is maybe smart but not so intelligent enough. I say that Google Blog Search is smarter and more intelligent than Google Search in recognizing which one is valuable having crawled and indexed the original article instead of the copied one. I just do not know if Google Blog Search lets itself to be fooled too by other blogs and sites where Google Search, in my opinion, failed big time.

How to get indexed by Google in 3 minutes? Is that possible? Yes, it is possible! How many times did I write on how to get indexed by Google as well as Bing? A few times, for the reason that I would like to show you that there is really no secret on how to get indexed by Google or by Bing. Your blog or site could get indexed by Google within 3 minutes, 12 minutes, 12 hours, 3 months, or it could even take longer, or not get indexed at all. If you would like your blog or site to get indexed by Google, you have to learn how to optimize your crawling and indexing for Google. That is the fact and that is no secret.

On August 11, 2009, I wrote this blog entry How to optimize your crawling and indexing for Google which was published at 10:25am. Then I checked my Google Reader as I am monitoring and tracking other sites using several keywords. There I saw that at 10:28am, Google crawled and indexed the blog entry.

How to optimize your crawling and indexing for Google blog entry was indexed by Google within 3 minutes. Then I checked Google Blog search after 12 minutes and saw that it was actually really got indexed by Google. But when I checked the main Google search, it was nowhere to be found. I left it at that as I know Google behaves differently. Google “thought” that my blog entry on how to optimize your crawling and indexing was not relevant at that moment.

After two weeks, I checked Google search today. I entered the keywords “how to optimize your crawling and indexing” and saw that the blog entry is finally listed, number 5 at the second page, Results 11-20 of about 47,200 for how to optimize your crawling and indexing keywords.

I also would like to tell you that the blog entry was not linked anywhere but I was linking several relevant topics to it. It just goes to show that with or without incoming links, Google will index and crawl your blog or site any time it wants. You can influence it a little bit but no matter what, it is Google dictating how it should be done. Some of the blog entries that I wrote got indexed within 3 minutes, within 1 hour, and within 12 hours which shows us that crawling and indexing a blog or site vary from the point of view of Google.

By the way, just a note, I changed the title from “How to optimize your crawling and indexing with Google” to “How to optimize your crawling and indexing for Google”.

One good thing about this topic is that, I do not have to write about it anymore. Google Webmaster Central created a very good and useful slide presentation on how to optimize your crawling and indexing for Google.

It was shown at the slide presentation what not to do with your site so that your site will be crawled and indexed faster. Aside from what has been shown on the slide presentation, they also wrote some more recommendations to help the crawlers find your content faster.

Remove user-specific details from URLs.

Rein in infinite spaces.

Disallow actions Googlebot can’t perform.

One URL, one set of content.

How to get indexed by Google? That was also my question, how to get Google to crawl and index Problogit.com. Actually, Google already have crawled and indexed the front page and other pages of this blog but not really the blog entries. I have seen a few of the blog entries that have been indexed by Google but not all.

I mentioned at the blog entry Prioritizing Maintaining Blogs and Sites that Google have not really indexed the blog entries of Pro Blog it and so I am redirecting my focus to my other blogs. I did not check Google before I wrote that blog entry if Google already indexed the blog entries only to find out today that Google have actually crawled and indexed the blog entries of Pro Blog it, ProBlogging Venture Tips and Ideas, Reviews and Opinions.

Get Indexed by Google

Less than three (3) months after I launched this blog, the blog entries have been finally indexed by Google. Maybe three (3) months is too long for others but that is good enough for me. It is better than not being indexed at all.

How and when did it happen? I really do not know. I was not really paying attention to it as I was on vacation for three (3) weeks. I am not an SEO / search engine optimization guru so I could not really tell you exactly what happened here. I know a little bit of search engine optimization though. I just did whatever I think was necessary and acceptable to Google.

I wrote content for this blog. I linked some of the blog entries if I find that it is worth linking from the new blog entry. Those are the two things that I can really tell you. Other than that, I really have no idea how and when did Google index the blog entries. I was not so trying hard to get the attention of Google. I just wrote content for this blog and that was it.

I have not even asked other bloggers and probloggers to link my blog from their blogs. I have not even started commenting regularly on other blogs using the domain name of this blog. I once made some comments to other blogs using my other domain name and then mentioned this blog just to inform some blogger friends that I finally started problogging.

I did not submit the URLs to Google, only the domain name problogit.com which I mentioned when I wrote ProBlogging ProBlogit.com Google Search Results. I do not have a detailed Google Sitemap but I have Archives page. I am not so very particular about these things but I do check once in a while how my blogs perform.

So, did I get Google to crawl and index my blog? Yes! How? I just wrote content for this blog, linked other blog entries every time I wrote a new blog entry, and that was it. But up to now, that is still a question, how to get Google to crawl and index other blogs and sites. As I see it, I think I just have to do what I did here, write more content as often as I can.

But wait, I would have to mention though that I have an account with Google Webmaster Tools where I added this site or the domain name problogit.com. I think it is necessary to mention this as this has definitely a bearing on how and when ProBlogit.com was crawled and indexed by Google.

Last Monday FedEx delivered a package for me but I was not able to get it. FedEx left a note where to call to schedule another delivery. They also called up but I was on the other line so I was not able to talk to the caller. I was already wondering who could possibly sent me a package because I did not receive any notice from my family or friends to expect any package.

The next morning I called the toll free line of FedEx. Upon hearing the prepared instructions, I thought I had to pick up the package as I heard nothing about new delivery but a new pick up schedule. I just dialed the number for pick up and when I asked the lady that FedEx told my husband to call to schedule another delivery, she said the package will in fact be going to be delivered to me. I asked the lady from whom was the package but she only said about Leed’s and it had something to do with electronics.

A few minutes before 2:00pm the delivery lady of FedEx arrived. I did not open the package right away as I was thinking that maybe it was just a mistake. I looked at all the papers accompanying the package. It was not written on the paper what kind of electronics or things were inside the package. There was no indication that it was from Google but somewhere written was this company called Think Big Creations. I searched for Think Big Creations and there I found some products like Google being sold.

I really hesitated opening the package but then I thought to myself that it was after all addressed to me so it must really be for me. When I opened the package, I had the back of the box facing me so I thought it was not from Google. Then I just realized that I had the back and when I turned it around, there it was, Google and underneath it was LEED’S.

I opened the box and there I saw a Google optical mouse, a wireless mouse in fact, a receiver for the mouse which I first thought a flash drive, a PS/2 adaptor for the mouse, a Google 4-port USB Hub, and a Google ballpen.

I was really surprised. I did not know what made Google to send me this nice gift. I searched the net and found out that some people already got this kind of package as a Christmas gift way back in December 2005 in a sort of leather-type case. So what made Google sent me this package when it is not even Christmas yet? There was no letter at all to explain anything.

I received a Christmas gift certificate from Google worth 100 Swiss Francs in 2007 for being an AdSense publisher but the certificate was for AdWords. It just expired on December 31, 2008 but never really used it. Then last year dated November 20, 2008, I got another Christmas Google gift certificate worth 75 Swiss Francs as an AdSense publisher and the certificate was again for AdWords but have not used it yet.

I really did not expect anything from Google despite the gift certificates. When I read about this Google gift, some mentioned that it had something to do with being a big earner AdSense publisher or AdWords advertiser. But I am neither of the two, I am not a big earner AdSense publisher neither do I advertise using AdWords. I do not know the requirements or policies of Google for me to get a surprise Google gift, it is not even Christmas yet, but I tell you, I really appreciate it.

ProBlogit.com ProBlogging Venture Tips and Ideas, Reviews and Opinions has been crawled and indexed by Google. Pro Blog it dot com is 1 month and 2 days old today. It was also a month and 2 days ago when I submitted ProBlogit.com to Google search, MSN Live search and Yahoo search, the day I started writing about problogging. I did not really mind when it will be indexed or crawled by the big search engines but just after a few days, I saw that all the three search engines have already crawled ProBlogit.com.

I just left it that away, and then thought that I might as well document the search results so I can share the reports to you. So after three weeks of being online problogging and that was a week ago, I checked Google search, MSN Live search and Yahoo search.

The image of the screenshot above was taken on April 30, 2009. I only got the above results after searching Google for the second time using the same keywords “problogging ideas”. ProBlogit was ranked number three during the first Google search.

I concentrated on Google search results, used different keywords to see how did I do with Google search. For a time being there, with keyword “problogging” I was in page 6 and sometimes page 7 on April 26, 2009, and in page 1 with “problog it”, “problogit”, “problogit.com” keywords. I did not check other keywords other than that but on April 30, 2009, I checked again how was Pro Blog it doing with Google search. I used some more other keywords to search for Pro Blog it at Google.

I did not search Google on April 30, 2009 using the above three keywords but the sites which are ranking higher today than Pro Blog it are actually my two other Websites, my web design site and my personal blog.

With keywords “pro blog it”, I could not seem to rank high with these keywords, so today I changed the title from “ProBlogit.com” to “Pro Blog it”. You probably noticed it. I would like to see how will it affect my rank at Google with keywords “pro blog it”.

So, you see, it is like a now you see now you don’t thing, and it is like riding a roller coaster, in a few minutes you are somewhere up there, and in just a matter of seconds, you are down somewhere, or even nowhere to be found.

How does Google crawl or index the sites or blogs? As I see it, the more you write, the more Google will find you. But there are hundreds or thousands of people out there, bloggers and probloggers alike who are writing every minute of the day, so your rank at Google search is most likely to change everyday, every minute of the day.

I just realized too that because I am not writing during Saturdays and Sundays, Google seems to notice it.
